Starting Over After Life Changes/Ladybug Laughs
Starting over after life changes isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes joy returns through new routines, little freedoms, and wonderfully ordinary days.
The Unexpected Joy of Starting Over
I used to think starting over would feel… well… bigger. I imagined trumpets. A dramatic movie soundtrack. Maybe a wise old woman appearing on a mountaintop with life-changing advice and a really good casserole recipe.
Instead, starting over looked a lot like standing in HomeGoods for forty-five minutes, trying to decide whether I wanted blue throw pillows or green ones. Because for the first time in a very long time, nobody else had an opinion.
It was strangely unsettling. And, if I’m being honest…a little thrilling.
Starting over after life changes, I discovered, doesn’t always arrive with some enormous declaration that a brand-new chapter has begun. Sometimes it looks surprisingly ordinary.
Nobody Warns You About the Little Freedoms
People prepare you for the big changes. They tell you life will be different, that you’ll find your footing, that one day you’ll feel like yourself again.
What they don’t tell you is that one Tuesday afternoon you’ll find yourself eating popcorn for dinner while watching a Hallmark movie…because you can. Nobody is asking where the meatloaf is. Nobody is complaining that Hallmark movies all have the same ending.
For the record, they absolutely do. And I watch every single one anyway.
Freedom sometimes looks surprisingly ordinary.
Rearranging the Living Room Is Surprisingly Good Therapy
One Saturday I decided to move the couch. Not because it needed moving, but because I wondered what it would look like facing the window instead of the television.
I pushed. Pulled. Scooted. Stopped for chai tea. Questioned every decision I’d ever made. Then pushed it back six inches. I stood there with my hands on my hips and thought, “Hmm…”
It wasn’t perfect. But neither was I.
For reasons I still can’t explain, that little project made me ridiculously happy. Not because the room looked different, but because I had simply followed my own idea. No committee meeting. No vote. No “I liked it better the other way.” Just, “Hmm…let’s see what happens.”
I wish I’d realized years earlier how much joy lives inside those five little words.
Starting Over After Life Changes Happens on Thursdays Too
Everyone talks about holidays after life changes. Birthdays. Anniversaries. Christmas. Those deserve the attention they get. But nobody ever mentions Thursdays—lovely, ordinary Thursdays, the kind where nothing remarkable happens.
One afternoon I found myself folding towels, humming some random song I’d heard on the radio. Halfway through, I stopped. Not because anything was wrong, but because I suddenly realized I was happy.
Not fireworks happy. Not “everything is perfect” happy. Just Thursday happy. The kind that quietly sneaks into your life while you’re busy matching socks—or pretending to match socks. We all know they’re mostly making it up.
My Favorite Version of Me Wasn’t the One I Expected
If you’d asked me years ago what this chapter of my life would look like, I would’ve gotten almost everything wrong. I wouldn’t have guessed I’d enjoy early morning walks or that fresh hydrangeas on the kitchen table could improve my mood by at least thirty percent.
I have absolutely no scientific evidence to support this. It simply feels true.
I also wouldn’t have guessed I’d become perfectly content sitting on the porch with a mug of chai tea, watching the tide roll in and wondering why seagulls always seem so incredibly confident. Seriously, has anyone ever seen an insecure seagull? I don’t think so. They’re out there strutting around the beach like they own Rhode Island.
I admire that.

Turns Out…I Kind of Like My Own Company
One of the biggest surprises? Turns out…I’m pretty good company.
Now, before you think I’ve completely lost it, hear me out. I laugh at my own jokes, mostly because somebody has to. I buy fresh flowers simply because they’re pretty. I’ve been known to drive to the beach with absolutely no destination beyond, “I’d like to see the water for a little while.”
I rearrange furniture for reasons I can’t adequately explain and then spend three days deciding whether I liked it better before. I’ve even caught myself talking to the seagulls. They remain unimpressed. Frankly, they’re a tough crowd.
Years ago, somebody asked me a question I’ll never forget: “If you had to be best friends with anyone…who would you choose?” Without missing a beat, I answered, “Myself.”
Not because I think I’m fascinating—although I do tell a pretty decent story. It’s because I know exactly what I’d be getting: a friend who laughs easily, who cries during Hallmark movies, who always says yes to a beach walk, who occasionally loses her reading glasses while wearing them, and who believes chai tea can solve at least sixty percent of life’s problems.
Honestly…that’s not a bad friend to have.
These days, I don’t mind spending an afternoon by myself. I’ll wander through HomeGoods without anyone asking if we’re almost done. I’ll browse a bookstore for an hour. I’ll sit on the porch and watch the tide roll in. Not because I’m waiting for someone to join me, but because I’m already in pretty good company.
The Unexpected Part of Starting Over
Maybe that’s what surprised me most. I thought starting over would mostly be about what I’d lost. Instead, some of it has been about discovering things I didn’t know were waiting for me: my routines, my preferences, my own company.
A living room arranged simply because I liked it that way. Popcorn for dinner. Flowers bought for no occasion whatsoever. A quiet afternoon that didn’t need to be filled.
Starting over after life changes doesn’t mean pretending the changes didn’t hurt. It doesn’t mean every day suddenly becomes easy. Sometimes it simply means allowing yourself to discover that something beautiful can grow beside what was difficult.
The next chapter can be different from the one you planned…and still become a chapter you genuinely love.
