Getting Older: I Make Sound Effects When I Stand Up

Somewhere along the way, standing up started requiring sound effects, staff meetings, and clearance from the control tower. Welcome to getting older.

I Now Make Sound Effects When I Stand Up

I don’t remember exactly when it started. I just know it wasn’t there in my thirties.

One day I sat down in my favorite chair. A perfectly ordinary event. Then I stood up.

“Uhhhhhh…”

I froze. Who made that noise? I looked around the room. Nobody. Just me. Interesting.

The next morning I bent over to pick up the newspaper. “Oof.” Again, a completely different sound effect. By the end of the week, I’d apparently developed an entire vocabulary: “Ope.” “Oooh.” “Well…” “Goodness.”

Apparently my body had hired its own sound effects department without consulting management.

And if you’re looking for funny getting older stories, apparently all you really have to do is stand up after sitting for twenty minutes. Your body will write one for you.

Apparently, Standing Up Requires an Announcement

I’m not even sure why I do it. Nothing hurts. Nothing is particularly difficult. And yet, somewhere along the way, I apparently decided that getting out of a chair should be announced to the room.

“Ooof.”

Sometimes there’s even a “Here we go,” which seems unnecessarily dramatic considering I’m usually just walking to the kitchen.

Nobody asked for commentary. Apparently, I provide it anyway.

Every Piece of Furniture Has Become a Team Sport

Sitting down? Easy. Standing back up? Also easy.

Quietly? Apparently not.

Before I get out of a chair, my body likes to hold a quick staff meeting. My brain announces that we’re getting up. My hands find the armrests. I lean forward like we’re preparing for something considerably more ambitious than walking across the room.

And somewhere in the back, my bladder quietly says, “While we’re up…”

Apparently, she always has one more item for the agenda. By the time everyone’s had their say, I’ve forgotten why I stood up in the first place.

I Injured Myself…Sleeping

I’m not proud of this.

I woke up one morning with a sore shoulder. I hadn’t gone hiking. I hadn’t lifted weights. I hadn’t wrestled alligators.

I’d slept. Aggressively, apparently.

Who knew sleeping had become an extreme sport? Frankly, I’m beginning to think I need to stretch before bed.

The Noise Isn’t Even Coming From Me Anymore

Now it’s the whole house. I stand up. The chair squeaks. The floor creaks. The stairs complain.

The only thing in this house that still moves effortlessly is the fruit fly that somehow survived three winters in my kitchen.

Show-off!

Public Restrooms Have Become Humbling

Here’s something nobody warns you about. When you’re in a public restroom and you stand up, everyone in the next three stalls now knows approximately how old you are.

“Oooof…”

Silence.

Then, from the next stall: “Same.”

Ladies, we’re a sisterhood.

Apparently, even getting out of the comfy chair deserves an “oof” now.

I Think My Body and I Need Better Communication

The funny thing is, my brain still thinks I’m thirty-five. It comes up with brilliant ideas like, “Let’s paint the guest room today!”

My body responds, “Wonderful. We’ll begin sometime next Thursday.”

My brain says, “Let’s carry all the mulch bags ourselves.” My back quietly files an HR complaint.

I’ve reached the point where I don’t bounce out of bed anymore. I negotiate my exit. Some mornings I swing my legs over the side of the mattress and sit there for a minute like I’m waiting for clearance from the control tower.

Apparently takeoff requires authorization now.

Maybe This Is One of the Better Parts of Getting Older

Here’s what I’ve decided. I could be annoyed by all of it—the mysterious shoulder injuries, the dramatic exit from low furniture, the fact that standing up now occasionally sounds like someone opening an antique trunk.

Or I can laugh.

Because there is something wonderfully freeing about reaching an age when your body makes an unsolicited noise in public, and the woman in the next stall simply says, “Same.”

Maybe funny getting older stories aren’t really about getting older at all. Maybe they’re about finally realizing we’re all much more alike than we thought. We make noises. We forget why we entered rooms. We discover muscles we didn’t know existed because apparently we slept incorrectly.

And somehow, here we are. Still laughing.

The Soundtrack of Getting Older

I’m happy to report that I’ve made peace with all the mysterious sound effects. They’re simply part of the soundtrack now.

Besides, every “oof,” “ugh,” and “well then…” reminds me I’ve been fortunate enough to collect a few birthdays. I wouldn’t trade those.

I’ve been sitting here writing this article for almost an hour, which means standing up has officially become a group project.

So if you hear an enthusiastic “Oof!” coming from somewhere along the Rhode Island coast, don’t worry. It’s just me heading to the kitchen for another cup of chai.

Or maybe a rosé. 🐞
